Reclaim Your Health

2016…Make it Your Year

I have never been a fan of New Year’s Resolutions. For one thing, studies have shown that they never work. More importantly, I see my patients set themselves up for unrealistic expectations to later realize that they can’t maintain their choices.

One of the reasons that I think that Resolutions fail is that people don’t have a clear reason or vision as to what they really want for their health. If you ask most people, they will say that they want to lose some weight. What they haven’t thought of is why they want to lose weight.  If you can tap into the leverage that motivates you, things become so much easier to stick with.

I always try to steer my patients away from using weight as a sole motivator.  On any lifestyle plan you want to be open to recognizing all of the other health benefits that come with it. These usually include, better sleep, more energy, better digestion, less bloating, clear skin, less joint pain or clear focus. When we can start to recognize the relationship of how food makes us feel, it is then that we have the leverage to happily continue eating in this way.

My best patient visit is when they come back and let me know that the program I placed them on has not only worked to alleviate their symptoms, but they feel happy doing it. Food is a huge part of your life, and no one wants to feel they are eating in a way that doesn’t resonate with them.

Now the question becomes, what do you want to see for your Health for 2016.

If it is weight loss…Great!

How much, and then discover Why you want to lose the weight.

There is no right or wrong answer for this. Some will say because they want to be in less pain, others will say that they want to fit into their old clothes. The reason is personal, but the fact that you are clear will make this your year to reclaim your health.  It is also a great idea to write your 3 health goals down on a piece of paper, and then post it somewhere where you can be reminded daily. If weight loss is your goal, instead of making it about losing 15lbs before your trip to Cuba in March. Set a more positive goal like by the end of 2016 I will weigh  “x”. This means that not only do have to achieve that weight, but you have to maintain it.

The key to doing this happily is accepting where you are, and figuring out a clear path to regaining your balance. Not setting an unrealistic New Year’s Resolution because you are feeling negative about yourself.  The confidence you have in yourself that you can “do it” and maintain these choices is one of the most important determining factors in your success.

Remember the powerful words of Henry Ford.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.

Getting Started

While I am all about sustainable plans, everyone needs a good kick in the butt every once and awhile.   Lets face it, we really can do anything for 2 weeks.

My suggestion to everyone…including myself, is that every time you are off your plan for an extended period of time (ie. more than a couple of days) it is important to do a reset.

The reset is very simple and can be as intense as you like. Ideally you will pull things like grains, sugars, alcohol, caffeine, processed and refined food.

My Purpose for Suggesting the Reset to Everyone

  1. supports your blood sugars to reduce cravings
  2. helps to manage appetite
  3. gives you energy and clarity
  4. stops the behaviours before they become habits

Christmas is a time where everyone tends to indulge, and most of us could use a little reset to stop the cravings cycle…or feeling required to finish the rest of the Christmas goodies. The faster you get back on track after a lifestyle program “vacation” the easier it is to get back on track!!

In order to reestablish these new habits, it is important to focus on retraining your brain.  Each day track three things that went well. This retrains the mind to focus on the positive things that are happening.

For those of you that feel like you need an extra kick start, you can choose to do the Clear Change 10 day Detox Program from Metagenics.

The program provides you with a detox protein powder, a bottle of advaclear and a shaker cup. Normally retails at 160$, but we were able to get a discount and are passing those savings onto you. We have limited kits and they are on sale for $100
